When your LG refrigerator displays “OF F” (horizontal) or “O FF” (vertical), the appliance is in Demo Mode—a retail store setting that completely disables cooling while keeping lights and controls functional.
The compressor NEVER runs in demo mode. Your food will spoil within hours if this isn’t corrected.
Why Demo Mode Activates
- Floor model purchase: Retail stores use demo mode for display units
- Accidental activation: Button combination pressed unintentionally
- Static electricity: Removing protective plastic while powered on can trigger it
- Factory settings: New refrigerator wasn’t properly configured before delivery
How to Exit Demo Mode
Method 1: 2019+ Models (Serial Number 901+)
- Open either refrigerator or freezer door
- Locate REFRIGERATOR and ICE PLUS buttons on the control panel
- Press and hold both buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds
- Listen for a beep
- Wait for a second beep—temperature settings should now display
- The dispenser will initialize
Method 2: Older Models
- Open the refrigerator door
- Press and hold REFRIGERATOR + FREEZER buttons for 5 seconds
- Wait for beep and temperature display
Method 3: Alternative Combinations
If the above methods don’t work, try:
- FREEZER + ICE PLUS for 5 seconds
- REFRIGERATOR + FREEZER for 5 seconds
- Check your owner’s manual for model-specific instructions
The specific button combination varies by model year and type. If the first method doesn’t work, try the alternatives. The key is holding two buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds.
Static Electricity Fix
If demo mode appeared immediately after removing protective plastic from your new refrigerator:
- Unplug the refrigerator
- Wait 15 minutes for static charge to dissipate
- Plug back in
- Demo mode should be cleared
This happens because static electricity from the plastic film can trigger the demo mode circuit.
How to Know It’s Working
After exiting demo mode:
- Temperature numbers display (instead of “OF F”)
- You should hear the compressor start within a few minutes
- The interior will begin cooling
- Allow 24-48 hours for temperatures to fully stabilize
Check Your Food
If the refrigerator was in demo mode for any significant time:
- Check food temperatures with a thermometer
